This is what happens on Valentine's Day, when you make a Red Velvet cake and look away for a second... your toddler gets a hand in the bowl!!! I was too busy laughing to really be mad.. plus it never stained!

Reading her favorite new books... Clifford!!!

Oh No! Clifford is making a "mess".. one of her fav. lines.

Baby Congrats!

Congratulations to my friend Sarah Norvold and her husband Jarrod!
They just had their baby after midnight last night!
Levi Jarrod Norvold
7 lbs 9 oz
20 1/2 inches long
It sounds like it was a hard labor for both Mom and baby, resulting in an emergency C-Section.. much like my story with Leah! :( But they are both healthy and well as of this morning, and Levi is beautiful!!! I am sooo excited for them!!!

Easy Ways to Save $

It seems like everyone I talk to now (all my SAHM mom friends and lots of others) are trying to figure out ways to cut costs and save money, whether to save for a new house/garage purchase (this is us) save for a new vehicle, pay off medical bills, or just to have cash set aside!

I wanted to let you 5 of the best ways I save money around our house. :)

1) I make my own Baby Wipes.
I cannot stress this enough!!! I have simply saved HUNDREDS of dollars doing this, as opposed to buying. For example, When Leah was born, I purchased a Huge pack (10 rolls I think) of High-Quality, Bounty Paper Towels. ($10 for the pack) For her baby shower we received lots of Johnson's Baby Shampoo (2 bottles) and Baby Oil (2 bottles) For her entire first year of life, I only used 1 1/2 of the Bounty Packs and 1 bottle each of Shampoo and Oil!!! (Translates to about $15 for entire year's supply of baby wipes!!) What a great deal!!!!!!! Just now as Leah reaches 2 years old, I am on my 4th purchased Bounty Pack, and have never had to purchase Shampoo or Oil yet!!!

2) I cook from scratch and try to avoid packaged foods.
This alone saves us lots of money on our grocery budget and it frees us up from all the chemical junk in processed foods anyway! It does take a bit more time to prepare meals, and for some of us time is money, but for a SAH Mom like me, it is worth the extra effort! Plus I often cook ahead and freeze meals for future use.

3) I never buy new clothes.
With the exception of my husband Josh!!! (Carpenters go through jeans like crazy, and need brand new ones!!!) (Another excepetion would be great clearance deals!) I love shopping at thrift stores, often using store credit from my "donations", so usually I get lots of FREE items! Plus friends have been very generous with donations of clothes, shoes and outerwear, especially for Leah! I also love to sew, and sometimes it is much cheaper than buying, but in our stores today often it is just as cheap to buy!!

4) We cut all our un-necessary things out of budget.
Such as long-distance on our phones.. we use Josh's cell phone for all our long distance calls. (which we pay for anyway!) Also, we used to have certain "extras" (Movie rentals, TV channels, magazine subsriptions, etc) which were nice, but in the end we determined they weren't worth the $ we were spending every month. There are lots of free options out there for entertainment.. borrowing movies from friends, library check-outs, etc.

5) Never buying what isn't on my list, and using cash as opposed to credit.
Of course there are exceptions to this rule (I forgot to write down something, great clearance deals, etc) But for the most part I usually stick to my list, and if it's not written down, it's not that important. I find once I go home and unpack groceries, I'm usually right! It is a hard rule to stick to in a store though! Another example is when we get gas for our van. I try and not charge anything extra on our gas card except gas, (ie: Coffee, drinks, snacks, gum) These all seem like little purchases, but they add up very fast!! Another great rule I recently discovered is paying with cash. Yes, it is a LOT harder to keep that total down when you know you only have a set amount in your pocket! I find when I carry cash as opposed to a check, I am 90% more likely to stick to my original budgeted amount, as if I write a check, saying to myself "A few extra dollars won't hurt that much"

Just a couple of ideas that have helped us save a LOT of money over the years.. I hope it might help some of you! :)

Wheat prices set to soar.. what to do?

I don't know if any of you have heard, but by May of this year, wheat prices are expected to triple or even quintuple in price due to high demand from last year's bad crops. (Drought I think)

While I'm usually not one to jump on "the-sky-is-falling" hyped-up bandwagons, I have heard from multiple reputable sources that wheat prices will be increasing substantially very soon, and I have started seeing this as true for myself! (Harmony Foods Co-op and Our Buying Club has already almost doubled in price for any wheat berries or flour. Plus I have noticed even non-organic places (ie:Walmart) are going up in price too!) Our family uses quite a bit of flour and wheat berries, and I'd hate to have to buy any more at these ultra-extravagant prices.. So I've thought of a few things to do!

1) Stock up!!! - I have just purchased from Wheat Montana 2-50lb Bags of enriched, "vitaminized", unbleached white flour for $30 each, and I also topped off my Whole Wheat Berry supply with another 25 lbs for $21, as I grind my own wheat flour.. (much healthier for you)
I am very excited to have found such a great deal.. I was getting a little worried about it.. what a blessing to have a friend who is in Montana buying for us, as well as them!!

2) Buy my Pre-made mixes now! - I'm sure jumping Wheat prices will affect cake, brownie, muffins, and any kind of mixes sold in grocery stores very soon. I don't buy a lot of these, but I do like having some on hand and often buy with coupons for free or almost free. Now would be a great time to stock up on ones I actually use, and want to have for cheap!

3) Be Frugal in what I use! - I usually bake everything by scratch, and sometimes can over-do it with cooking to many things at once.. what can I say, I love baking! I need to learn to be frugal.. making bread only when we need it, freezing any leftover pieces, using crust pieces for bread crumbs, trying to limit dessert-making, cookies, cakes, etc.. There are many ways I can learn to be more frugal with our food. Just because I have 100 lbs of flour doesn't mean I should bake like I have an army to feed! :)

Those are just a few of my ideas. What about you?
I'd love to hear what you are planning on doing about wheat prices!!

So many things to do!!!

I have been having a busy week, and for that I am glad! Now that I am in the 3rd Trimester, I need things to do to keep me busy! Well, I have lots to do this week!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I accepted the "Church Librarian" position at our Church, and that has been really fun! It's like having my own personal "Rainbow Bookstore" again! I miss that place so much! I have been busy processing many donations this week, (lots of new books!!!) writing up an article for the bulletin, and organizing my library budget to order supplies. :) I know I'll love being librarian!
I also have a nice list accumulating of "Things to do before the baby is born"
Here are some of them.. :)

1) Finish writing in/updating Leah's Baby Book - I did do this yesterday! Yes!
2) Start writing in new baby's Baby Book, while I still remember things about pregnancy!
3) HUGE Project.. finish my Photo Albuming. I am behind since last May.. I need to print out all the pictures I want from Wal-mart, buy them, and organize and place the photos in Leah's baby album and our family album. MUST finish this soon!!!
4) Start packing my things for the Hospital.. always nice to have it done ahead of time!
5) Finish my last minute sewing projects.. buttonholes for Leah's nighties and apron. Yuck!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So as you can see, I have had a busy week, and hope to keep busy to pass the winter-time blues away! Yes, the Cold is getting to everyone here, especially me!! But it won't last forever.. I hope!
Great week to you all!

Our special Valentine's Day

This year for Valentine's Day Night, we actually chose to stay home!!
I had never had the privilege of cooking my hubby a special gourmet meal, so I was delighted to get to plan one! Here's what we ate for our special dinner.
~Menu~
Steamed Artichokes served with Garlic Butter Dipping Sauce
Fresh Popovers served with Honey Butter
House Salad with choice of dressing
Twice Baked Bacon Casear Potatoes
16 oz Top Cut Sirloin Steak
Red Velvet Layer Cake with Cream Cheese and Strawberries (Heart Shaped of course!)
As I planned it, we got to eat it in courses, (Leah ate hers all at once) which made our dinner very special and just like eating in a restaurant!! Except for the fact that our grill was being finicky on starting in the cold.. but it finally did and we ate our yummy steaks right on time!! :)
My Joshy surprised me and brought home a lovely long stemmed red rose, and a Cold Stone Ice Cream Cake!!! So we skipped my planned dessert, (but it keeps!) and had a special treat instead! It was so yummy! Then we topped off our night by watching "The Notebook" (one of my favorite movies) after Leah went to bed. It was a great Valentine's Day!!!
Note to self: Twice Baked Potatoes are WELL worth any effort to make, they are soooooo yummy!!!

Baby Update!

It's been a while since I've posted on our newest little Helweg, so here goes!
We are now at 28 weeks along, only leaving 12 weeks to go! I am very excited, and can't wait for D-Day! 86 Days and counting!!!
This baby loves to kick and is very active, which is really fun now.. as Josh and Leah can both feel (and see!) it. Leah doesn't quite understand that it is the baby, though. :)
This baby also loves to hang out in the transverse position, going sideways across my belly.. which is so different from what Leah did.. (she would kick my ribs black and blue!) I am liking this baby's behavior a lot.. makes it a lot more comfortable! Especially as I am feeling HUGE now! Frequent stops to the bathroom are very common also.. :) When isn't it in pregnancy? Sleeping has become a challenge sometimes to get comfortable, it seems like just when I do and start to fall asleep, the baby decides to wake up and have a kicking fest! It is fun though to feel the little feet, and even the tiny hands/fists sometimes! Very fun! Josh loves watching it move now as well as feeling it!
My nesting instincts haven't kicked in yet, but I am getting ready none the less! To have little clothes all gone through, and baby stuff out again has been so much fun!! I've also started stocking up on baby diapers and wipes when I can find them on sale, (also stocking up on Pull Ups for Leah when she decides to be Potty Trained!) I just can hardly wait to use them on my new little one!
As for deciding if it is a Boy or Girl, I WAS nearly 100% sure it was a boy, then I had a dream last week it was a girl, and because I thought it was a boy, I didn't want the girl! What a horrible dream!! :) So I am now 50/50 either way.. I am just not even thinking about what it could be.. I am going to be totally surprised! :) It's kind of a fun thing!
So all in all, pregnancy is well. I am Huge, starting to waddle, and yet Life is good!
So Thankful for this new life inside me, and hope it comes out soon! :)
